Does an older Apple Watch record HRV?
Yes. Apple Watch has saved heart rate variability to Apple Health since watchOS 4. It's stored as SDNN: the standard deviation of the time between normal heartbeats, in milliseconds. New to HRV? Start with HRV explained.
What changed with Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 is how often. Apple says they measure HRV up to 24 times more often, and add a Recovery HRV view in the Heart Rate app. Older Watches don't get those, but they keep recording HRV the way they always have.
To see yours, open the Health app on your iPhone and search for Heart Rate Variability. Each dot is one reading.
When your Watch takes a reading
- In the background. By default the Watch tries about every four hours, and only keeps a reading if you were still enough to get one. If you've turned on irregular rhythm notifications, it tries about every two hours.
- While you sleep. The same background checks run overnight if you wear the Watch to bed. You're still for hours, so nights usually give the cleanest readings.
- During a Breathe session. In the Mindfulness app, a Breathe session asks you to stay still for a minute or more. Afterwards the Watch saves an HRV estimate to Apple Health, and you can see it there.
A Reflect session in the same app doesn't ask you to be still, and Apple describes it as measuring heart rate, not HRV.
Why readings go missing
- You were moving. A reading needs stillness. A busy day can leave only one or two.
- The band was loose. The optical sensor needs good skin contact. Apple lists band fit and motion among the things that affect signal quality.
- Low Power Mode was on. Apple says Low Power Mode turns off background heart rate measurements, including during sleep. HRV comes from those background checks, so a night in Low Power Mode usually leaves little or none.
- The Watch was on the charger. No Watch overnight means no overnight HRV.
How to get more readings
- Wear it to bed. This matters more than anything else. Here's how to track sleep with Apple Watch.
- Charge before bed, not overnight.
- Keep Low Power Mode off overnight if your battery allows.
- Wear it snug. Firm but comfortable, so the sensor stays against your skin.
- Add a Breathe session if you want a daytime reading. It adds a reading to Apple Health, but see below for how Auralo treats it.
A few readings a day is normal, and it's enough. What makes HRV useful is a steady run of nights, not a big pile of samples from one day.
How Auralo uses HRV from an older Watch
Auralo's iPhone app reads the HRV your Watch saves to Apple Health, so any Watch that saves it works. (The Auralo Watch app itself needs watchOS 26 or later.)
- Nights only. Each night's HRV is the average of the readings taken during your main sleep, from the same device that recorded the sleep. Breathe readings and other daytime readings don't count toward it.
- Your own baseline. Last night is compared with the median of your previous 30 days. A baseline starts after 5 nights and counts as established from 14. There are no population thresholds.
- Recovery and stress. HRV is the largest part of the recovery score, at 45%. An overnight HRV below your usual also makes the stress score more sensitive that day.
- No HRV last night? Recovery uses resting heart rate, sleep and yesterday's strain instead, shows a lower confidence, and tells you why.
- No Watch at all? In 1.6 you can rest a fingertip on the iPhone's rear camera for a minute to get a heart rate and HRV reading (Beta). Once there are 3 earlier readings, Auralo compares today's with their median. It's a wellness estimate, not a medical measurement.
Everything is worked out on your iPhone. Your HRV isn't uploaded, and there's no account. See the privacy policy. Wondering about Apple's own score? See Apple's Readiness vs Auralo.
FAQ
Does my older Apple Watch record HRV?
Yes. Apple Watch has saved heart rate variability to Apple Health, as SDNN, since watchOS 4. It isn't a new-model feature. Series 12 and Ultra 4 measure it more often, but older Watches keep recording it in the background when you're still.
Why do I only see a few HRV readings a day?
By default the Watch tries a background reading about every four hours, and only keeps it if you were still enough. Moving, a loose band, Low Power Mode or taking the Watch off all mean fewer readings. A few a day is normal.
Does a Breathe session record HRV?
Yes. A Breathe session in the Mindfulness app asks you to stay still for a minute or more, and the Watch saves an HRV estimate to Apple Health afterwards.
What's the best way to get HRV on an older Apple Watch?
Wear it to bed. You're still for hours, so the background checks have the best chance of a clean reading. Keep the band snug, charge before bed, and keep Low Power Mode off overnight.
How does Auralo use HRV from an older Watch?
Auralo averages the HRV readings taken during your main sleep and compares that with your own 30-day baseline. It's the largest part of the recovery score, at 45%. If there's no HRV from last night, recovery uses resting heart rate, sleep and strain, and shows a lower confidence.
