Sleep, sleep coach & smart alarm

Sleep, measured against what you need.

Not a generic eight hours. Auralo learns how much sleep you need from your own nights, shows how close you got, and suggests a bedtime for tonight.

How it works

Last night, what you needed, and tonight.

  1. Step 1

    Last night, explained

Stages, time in bed, how much of it you were asleep, every time you woke for 5 minutes or more, and how far your heart rate dipped.

  2. Step 2

    The sleep you needed

Learned from your nights, plus a little more after a hard day or a run of short nights.

  3. Step 3

    A plan for tonight

A wind-down and bedtime from the sleep coach, and a smart alarm on your Watch if you want one.

In the app

A sleep coach that learns from you.

Every finished night teaches it something. All of it is worked out on your iPhone.

A bedtime that fits your life

The sleep coach works back from when you usually wake, and from the bedtimes that came before your best mornings. It moves at most 30 minutes from your habit, so the plan stays realistic.

  • Learns what costs you sleep: hard days, late workouts, caffeine, alcohol and travel
  • Sleep debt that fades over time, and pays down with longer nights
  • Consistency: whether you’re on your usual schedule, or 45 minutes later than usual
  • Overnight heart-rate dip against your own last 30 nights
Apple Watch Sleep page: 7 hours 21 minutes asleep, you needed 8 hours 7 minutes, deep sleep 1 hour 20 minutes, REM 1 hour 33 minutes, score 79 and sleep debt 2 hours.

A smart alarm on your wrist

Set the latest time you want to be up. In a window of up to 30 minutes before it, your Apple Watch waits for a light moment and wakes you with a tap.

  • Wakes on a burst of movement or a rise in heart rate
  • Can follow the sleep coach’s suggested wake time
  • What it reads stays on the Watch, never stored or sent

What Auralo+ adds

Questions, answered.

How does Auralo know how much sleep I need?

It looks at your own nights. Your base is the usual length of the nights that were followed by a good heart rate variability reading. Until it has 10 of those, it starts from 8 hours and says so. On top of that it adds up to 45 minutes after a hard day, and a little extra to pay back recent sleep debt.

How does the smart alarm work?

You set the latest time you want to be up. In a window of up to 30 minutes before it, your Apple Watch watches for a burst of movement or a rise in heart rate, signs that your sleep is lighter, and wakes you with a tap on the wrist. If neither comes, it wakes you at your latest time. It’s a light-sleep sign, not sleep staging. The movement and heart rate it reads stay on the Watch.

What is the overnight heart-rate dip?

How much lower your heart rate is asleep than awake, as a percentage. A dip of about 10 to 20% is typical. A smaller dip than your usual often follows a late meal, alcohol, stress or getting ill. Auralo compares it with your own last 30 nights.

Do I need to wear my Apple Watch to bed?

For stages, heart-rate dip and the smart alarm, yes. Auralo also reads sleep from other wearables and apps that write to Apple Health, such as Oura or a sleep app on your iPhone. If two devices record the same night, it picks one so nothing is counted twice.
